HOLD Trial

Do you or your partner currently experience low sexual desire? We are seeking couples living in British Columbia to take part in a new treatment study for low sexual desire, called the Helping with Outcomes for Low Desire Randomized Clinical Trial (HOLD Trial).

What is involved?

First, you and your partner will complete a brief screening process to check your eligibility for the trial. If eligible,

During the 18 week period, you will be asked to complete five 15-20 minute surveys regardless of whether you are receiving treatment or are on the waitlist.

You and your partner will be asked to complete three 30-45 minute surveys over a period of 12 months.

You and your partner will be randomly assigned to either complete 16 sessions of cognitive-behavioural couple therapy over 18 weeks on Zoom right away, or be on the waitlist for treatment.

Who is eligible?

    1. You or your partner have been experiencing low sexual desire for 6 months or more.
    2. The person with low sexual desire is a woman (cis or trans) or a gender diverse person assigned female at birth.
    3. You and your partner are both 18+ years of age.
    4. You and your partner have been in a relationship and living together for at least 1 year.
    5. You and your partner are both fluent in English.
    6. You and your partner have an email address and regular access to the Internet.

We warmly welcome BIPOC, trans and gender diverse, and LGBQ+ individuals and couples to participate, all of whom have been historically underrepresented in sexuality research.

What does the study look like?

If you are eligible to participate after two short screenering calls (one with a research assistant and anotherwith a trained clinical psychologist), you and your partner will fill out an initial survey.

After this survey, you will be randomly assigned into one of two groups: Treatment where you will start receiving the HOLD therapy immediately or Waitlist where you will receive the HOLD therapy after the study period is over (~11 months later). Couples in the Waitlist will be able to access the same therapy offered to the Treatment group after the study has concluded.

Regardless of what group you are in, both you and your partner will complete a series of surveys. These include: Five short online surveys during the treatment period and, following treatment, you will receive two surveys, one which will be completed immediately after the treatment period and another 6 months later.

    Compensation

For completing online surveys each partner can receive up to $100 CAD ($200 CAD per couple) in the form of gift cards. Individuals will only be compensated for the surveys that they complete. Therapy for those taking part in the study is complimentary (free).
